Top 5 songs to take to the island//

Rock with you – Michael Jackson
I was a huge Michael Jackson fan when I was younger - we even had twin noses(my nickname was MJ), which I still think is a solid enough reason on its own. I remeber getting Off the Wall album for my birthday and pretty much wore it out, loved it and still impossible to resist. It’s one of those tunes that reminds me just how powerful music can be as mood changers - bringing joy.

Enola Gay – OMD
My first gig was OMD (Sands Centre back in the 90s!), so this one comes with a built-in memory. Enola Gay is just a great track - sharp, catchy, melancholy in that very particular OMD way, and the video only makes me love it more, can't beat some YouTube video sessions and this always comes on. The gig was interrupted by a fire alarm, which was dramatic and inconveniently memorable. I can’t even remember if they got as far as playing it!

Passin’ Me By or Runnin’ – The Pharcyde
This is the difficult one, because really I love both! The Pharcyde were the soundtrack to a very long commute from East Dulwich to Goring-on-Thames for my first design job - a long commute! These songs are wrapped up in that whole time of life for me: first job, long journeys, big goals. I also saw The Pharcyde in Newcastle and then drove back to Carlisle at 1am in dense fog, which only adds to the memories I have. If I had to choose just one for the island, I’d have to go with Passin' me by.

Lark – Angel Olsen
Beautiful, raw and completely transporting. I love loads of Angel Olsen’s music, but Lark is the one I’d take to a desert island. The lyrics are stunning, the build of the song is incredible, and the video is fabulous - I love it. There’s something in it that reminds me of Kate Bush (Love a bit of bush) - that sense of drama, feeling, and total commitment, and I never tire of that. It’s the kind of song that unfolds.

If Not for You – Glen Campbell
This was the first dance at my wedding, so it was always going to be hard to beat. It took us a while to choose, but the words felt completely right, and Glen Campbell’s voice gives it so much warmth and tenderness without losing its lift (There have been many covers of Bob Dylans' origional but this is my fave). It’s poignant but still full of joy, hope and love, which is exactly what you want from a song tied to such a big moment.

First song / album you purchased//

The Immaculate Collection - Madonna
The first album I bought with my own money was, I think, The Immaculate Collection by Madonna. I wasn’t a huge fan, but I was fascinated by her. I did like the music, but also her style, her reinvention and her refusal to stay still. Even now, I still think Madge is pretty hardcore. I may not love every single thing she’s done musically, but I really admire someone who just keeps going, keeps creating, keeps reshaping and keeps doing what she loves. Why should anyone stop making music because they’re “old”? Crack on, I say.

A song for our inevitable demise//

Where Is My Mind? - Pixies
If there has to be a final song, I’m quite happy for it to be Where Is My Mind? by Pixies. They were the soundtrack to some of my first properly hard, wild and brilliantly fun days in London, and that song still has the power to take me straight back there. I saw them at a festival many moons ago, and if this comes on in the car now, I absolutely blast it. It’s the right mix of chaos, nostalgia and freedom, which feels like a pretty good way to go. :)

A guilty pleasure//

I Wish – Skee-Lo
I Wish by Skee-Lo. I can’t even fully explain why I loved it so much, except that I just did. Maybe it felt a bit like my anthem, seeing as I’m short 😆, which is as good a reason as any. It’s funny, catchy, and slightly ridiculous, which is exactly why it still works. I like to try and wrap to it - not a good look.

Your favourite record sleeve design//

Don’t Point Your Finger – Nine Below Zero
I loved the bright green record at the time. For me with a love for the design of things I loved this and then enjoyed the song! Like the song it’s bold, memorable and a proper reminder that music packaging can feel exciting before a note is even played.
